The Black-headed Saltator is distributed from Mexico through Central America to Panama. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found mainly in woodland habitat in the lowlands up to about 1,500m.

It is similar but smaller than Buff-throated Saltator S. maximus but always has a white rather than a buff throat.
