The Common Sandpiper breeds throughout most of Europe and much of central and northern Asia. It is mainly migratory and the northern winter is spent in the tropics and further south from Africa through the Middle East, India, south-east Asia and into Australia. Common Sandpiper, Daintree, Queensland, Australia, November 2010 - click for larger image Its behaviour is distinctive with a bobbing walk and a flickering flight with the wings looking stiff and beating rapidly. Plumage shows a white peak in front of the wing.
