The Yellow-winged Blackbird is distributed in south Brazil, Uruguay, central Argentina and central Chile and into the Altiplano of Bolivia and Peru. It is found in marshes and is always close to water.

The male is black with yellow shoulders and underwing coverts but these are not always shown as can be seen in the first photo. This also shows a female at the bottom of the frame with a pale supercilium and heavy streaking below. The other bird in this photo is a female Chestnut-capped Blackbird Chrysomus ruficapillus.

Male Yellow-winged Blackbird, Taim, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, August 2004 - click for larger image The second photo is of the same male bird in what I presume is the display that Alvaro Jaramillo calls the "ruff-out (song spread)" display with "the body plumage ruffled, the wings partially spread showing the yellow epaulets, and the tail slightly spread and held pointing downwards."
