The Yellow-tailed Parrot is distributed in Brazil south of the Amazon between the rio Purús to somewhere east of the rio Madeira. Most authorities give the rio Madeira as its eastern limit but these photos show that it is found further to the east. It is found in forest and seems particularly attracted to forest alongside rivers.

The eye is red and is surrounded by pale pink bare skin. The bill and feet are also pale pink. The yellow thighs and yellow upper tail distinguish it from Green-thighed Parrot Parrot P. leucogaster. Traditionally both species were included as sub-species of White-bellied Parrot P. leucogaster but the HBW and Birdlife International Checklist has split this.
