The Green-thighed Parrot is distributed in Brazil in a band south of the Amazon and east of the rio Juruá to the mouth of the Amazon. It is found in forest and seems particularly attracted to forest alongside rivers.

The eye is red and is surrounded by pale pink bare skin. The bill and feet are also pale pink. The green thighs and green upper tail distinguish it from Yellow-tailed Parrot P. xanthurus. Traditionally both species were included as sub-species of White-bellied Parrot P. leucogaster but the HBW and Birdlife International Checklist has split this.
