| Black-headed Parrot Pionites
melanocephalus (aka Black-crowned Parrot / Caique) |

| São Gabriel da Cachoeira, Amazonas,
Brazil August 2004 The Black-headed Parrot is distributed in the Amazon Basin north of the Amazon river and into the Guianas. There is a distribution map at NatureServe. It is found in humid forest, secondary growth and clearings. This rather distant shot shows the black crown, orange neck and otherwise green upperparts. The underparts show a yellow throat and upper breast with white on the lower breast and belly and yellow thighs, flanks and crissum. Truly a very handsome parrot. It feeds on seeds, fruit and flowers. Jeremy Minns' recording is of this very bird. |
