Black-headed Parrot Pionites melanocephalus

The Black-headed Parrot is distributed in the Amazon Basin north of the Amazon river and into the Guianas. There is a distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found in humid forest, secondary growth and clearings.

These rather distant shots shows the black crown, orange neck and otherwise green upperparts. The underparts show a yellow throat and upper breast with white on the lower breast and belly and yellow thighs, flanks and crissum. Truly a very handsome parrot.

It feeds on seeds, fruit and flowers.
