The Tropical Kingbird is one of the most abundant birds of open and semi-open habitat and it has adapted well to towns and cities.

There is a semi-concealed orange crown patch on its grey head and it has a pale grey throat leading to a dusky olive breast and yellow underparts.

It usually perches out in the open and is one of the first birds to sing in the day often before sunrise. It is also very pugnacious and will chase away much bigger birds in a somewhat "tyrannical" way.
