The Spectacled Whitestart is distributed from the extreme south-west of Colombia through Ecuador and Peru to central Bolivia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in montane forests and forest edges in the Andes at between 2,000 and 4,000 metres.

Photo 2, taken near Cruz Conga, Cajamarca shows the sub-species M. m. griseonuchus, with a rufous crown patch, found in the western Andes of Piura and Cajamarca, Peru.
