The Saffron-billed Sparrow is distributed in eastern Bolivia, southeastern Brazil, southern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. Unobtrusive, it is found in the undergrowth of forest and woodland.

The white streak starts just back from the eye and its dark breast band is unbroken which distinguishes it from the Half-collared Sparrow A. semitorquatus.
