The Chestnut-capped Brushfinch is distributed from southern Mexico through Central America to the Andes from Venezuela through Colombia and Ecuador to Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in forest and woodland undergrowth between 400 and 3,500 metres.
