The Half-collared Sparrow is endemic to the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, between Espírito Santo and northern Rio Grande do Sul. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. Inconspicuous, it is found in the undergrowth of woodland, forest and forest borders.

Half-collared Sparrow, Espirito Santo, Brazil, October 2022 - click for larger image It used to be considered a sub-species of Pectoral Sparrow A. taciturnus but is distinguished from that species by its yellow lower mandible as opposed to an all black bill and its half collar as compared to the full collar of the Pectoral Sparrow.
