The Rufous Spinetail is distributed in the Andes from western Venezuela to southern Peru. See the distribution map at NatureServe. It is found in the undergrowth of montane forest and forest edges and is often associated with Chusquea bamboo.

It is uniform bright rufous with black lores.

It makes a shrill "kwee" and this bird was recorded by Jeremy Minns.
