The Chotoy Spinetail is distributed in eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina, Uruguay and south Brazil with a disjunct population in the area around the upper São Francisco in Bahia and Minas Gerais. It is found in semi-open areas and gallery and monte woodland. It prefers being close to water.

The crown is chestnut and the chin is yellow with a black patch between the throat and a cinnamon band across the chest.
