Brazilian name: pica-pau-rei

Female Robust Woodpecker, Parque do Zizo, São Paulo, Brazil, November 2006 - click for larger image The Robust Woodpecker is distributed in south-east Brazil and adjacent areas of Paraguay and Argentina. It is found in Atlantic Rain Forest including araucaria forest and requires large trees and mainly undisturbed forest.

It is similar to other Campephilus woodpeckers and the male has a small black and white spot on the ear coverts which the female, shown here, lacks. Instead she has a white stripe with black margins from the base of the bill to the ear coverts.

Like other Campephilus woodpeckers, its drum is a double tap.

There are recordings and a distribution map on xeno-canto .
