The Maroon-bellied Parakeet is found in south-east Brazil and neighbouring areas of Paraguay and Argentina. It is a fairly common bird within these areas. There is a distribution map at xeno-canto.

Its preferred habitat is evergreen forest and it is closely linked to Araucaria and slash pine.

The most notable identification features are its reddish belly, the yellowish-green neck and breast, white eye-ring, the blue on the primaries and reddish-brown on the underside of the tail
