The Red-throated Piping-guan is found south of the Amazon to south west Amazonia. It is found in forests especially beside rivers.

Red-throated Piping-guan, Thaimaçu, Pará, Brazil, April 2003 - click for larger image There have been different treatments of this species but the HBW divides it into 2 subspecies: Pipile cujubi cujubi south of the Amazon between the Madeira river and northern Pará; and Pipile cujubi nattereri (as shown in these photos) in southern and western Amazonia. This sub-species has a larger red dewlap and more white on the crest and wings. This is the same treatment followed by Howard & Moore 4th Edition.
