The Blue-throated Piping-guan is distributed in a large arc around the northern, western and southern regions of the Amazon Basin. It is found in forest and cerrado woodland.

The white crest reaches further down the nape on the sub-species grayi than on the nominate and the white wing patch is more prominent.

It feeds on fruits and flowers and is rarely seen on the ground.
