The Band-tailed Guan is distributed in northern Colombia and northern Venezuela. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is the home of the sub-species P. a. colombiana. See the distribution map at NatureServe. It is found mainly in wet primary forest but occasionally in secondary growth. In the Santa Marta Mountains it occurs at between 1,000 and 2,700 metres.
