The Red-tailed Hawk is distributed throughout most of North America and into Central America and the Caribbean. The sub-species found on Cuba is B. j. solitudinis.

Red-tailed Hawk, Zapata Swamp, Cuba, February 2005 - click on image for a larger view It is found in forest and wooded swamp such as is found in the Zapata swamp. It feeds on birds, lizards, rodents and insects.

Adults have a rufous tail. Its long broad wings show a dark bar along the leading edge and a dark patch at the wrist.
