The Grey-headed Tanager is distributed in Central and South America from southern Mexico to the Amazon Basin and beyond. See the distribution map at NatureServe.

It is found in the undergrowth of forest, in shrubbery and on forest borders. As its Colombian name suggests it is frequently associated with army ants where it can feed off insects disturbed by the swarm.
