Pantanal , Mato Grosso, Brazil December 2006 The Grey-crested Cachalote is distributed in southern Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil, adjacent northern Paraguay and central and eastern Bolivia. Until recently it was regarded as conspecific with Caatinga Cachalote P. cristata but was split by Kevin Zimmer & Andrew Whittaker, The Rufous Cachalote is two species (Furnariidae: Pseudoseisura) Condor 102, 2 (2000): 409-422. |

It is found in gallery forest and in pantanal
grasslands and is often close to human habitation. It is darker than Caatinga Cachalote with a shorter bill and has greyish tips to its crest feathers. There are recordings and a distribution map on xeno-canto . |
