The Brown Cachalote is distributed in north and central Argentina, southern Bolivia, western Paraguay, Uruguay and the extreme south of Brazil. It is found in scrubby woodland including this espinilho habitat, deciduous forest and gallery forest.

Brown Cachalote, Barra do Quaraí, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, August 2004 - click for larger image It is a large member of the Ovenbird family with generally reddish-brown plumage with more rufous on the head and crest, rump and tail. The iris is pale yellow and the bill is light grey with a darker maxilla.

Like other members of the genus, it has a loud, grating voice. It is usually seen in pairs or small groups and eats insects, seeds and fruit.
