Caatinga Cacholote (Pseudoseisura cristata)

The Caatinga Cacholote is a Brazilian endemic found in the caatinga habitat of north-east Brazil.

Until recently it was regarded as conspecific with Gray-crested Cacholote P. unirufa but was split by Kevin Zimmer & Andrew Whittaker, The Rufous Cacholote is two species (Furnariidae: Pseudoseisura) Condor 102, 2 (2000): 409-422.

Caatinga Cacholote, Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil, March 2004 - click for larger image It is bright reddish-brown with a prominent crest and a yellow iris.

It is a cooperative breeder whereby several non-breeding helpers assist in building the nest, defending the territory and feeding the chicks.
