The Grass Wren is distributed in central and eastern North America where it is migratory and in the south of South America and along the Andes. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in damp grasslands but is difficult to see except when singing.

It is small and buffy brown with a streaked head and barred wings and tail. The tail is often held cocked.
