The Fasciated Wren is distributed in south-west Ecuador and coastal Peru south to about Lima with a disjunct population in the Marañón Valley. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in dry forest and arid scrub mainly below 2,000 metres.

It is banded blackish and whitish above while below it has greyish-brown spots.
