The Coppery-bellied Puffleg is distributed in north-west Venezuela and the eastern Andes of Colombia. See the distribution map at NatureServe. It is classified as Near Threatened by Birdlife International because of habitat loss.

It is found at between 2,000 and 3,000 metres in open habitats such as forest borders and páramo.
