The Chestnut-bellied Thrush is distributed in the Andes from Venezuela to the extreme north of Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in humid forest and forest borders at between 1,400 and 2,600 metres.

In appearance it is resembles the American Robin T. migratorius.
