The Cactus Parakeet is a Brazilian endemic which is restricted North-east Brazil. As its name suggests, it is found in semi-arid caatinga and cerrado habitats.

Caatinga Parakeet, Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil, July 2002 - click for larger image It is similar in appearance to Brown-throated Parakeet E. pertinax and has been considered conspecific by some authorities. The head, throat and breast are light brown except for the ear coverts which are green as are the nape and upperparts. The flight feathers are bluish and the belly is a dull orange. There is a white eye-ring.

In changing the genus from Aratinga to Eupsittula I have followed Howard and Moore 4th Edition. At the time of writing in July 2013 this treatment is a proposal in front of the South American Classification Committee which looks likely to be accepted.
