The Brown Tanager is a Brazilian endemic which is distributed in south-east Brazil from Espirito Santo to Santa Caterina. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found in forest mainly between 800 and 1,600 metres where it tends to stay in the canopy.

It is classified as Near Threatened because its habitat in the Atlantic Rain Forest is under threat.
