The Painted Bunting breeds in the USA along the Atlantic Coast and on southern USA and winters in Florida, Cuba and Central America. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is classified as Near Threatened. Recent declines in population are down to the loss of habitat in the USA partly to golf courses and the capture for the caged bird trade in Central America.
