The Red-crested Cardinal is distributed in Bolivia, Paraguay, southern and south-western Brazil, Uruguay and northern and central Argentina. It is found in semi-open areas with scattered shrubs or trees and is frequently seen near water.

It has a scarlet head, crest and long, pointed bib, a whitish bill, grey upperparts with black on the wings and tail, and white underparts.
