The Black-hooded Sierra-finch is distributed in the Andes of south Peru, south-west Bolivia, northern Chile and north-west Argentina. It is found in rocky areas usually near water and between 3,500 and 4,500 metres.

Black-hooded Sierra-finch, Putre, Chile, February 2007 - click for larger image It is the only hooded sierra-finch in most of its range and has a black hood, black wings and tail, tawny upperparts and tawny breast below shading to bright yellow on the belly. The female is duller and older birds have a slaty grey hood which seems to be the case with these individuals.
