The White-bellied Parrot is distributed in a band south of the Amazon from eastern Peru and northern Bolivia to the mouth of the Amazon. There is a distribution map on NatureServe. It is found in forest and seems particularly attracted to forest alongside rivers. |

Another attractive parrot, it
has an orange crown and neck, a yellow face and throat and a
white belly. The eye is red and is surrounded by pale pink bare
skin. The bill and feet are also pale pink.
Photos 1 to 4 were taken at Caxiuanã, Pará and show the nominate subspecies with a green uppertail and green thighs. |

Photos 5 to 7 were taken at Cristalino, northern Mato Grosso, and show the sub-species P. l. xanthurus with its yellow uppertail and yellow thighs. This is interesting because most authorities such as HBW and Juniper & Parr suggest that it is the nominate that is found in northern Mato Grosso state.

The other point of interest is the very dirty white bellies on all these birds. I wonder if they have been at a salt lick or similar. The feet on the bird in photo 5 are also very dirty..
