The Tasmanian Native-hen is endemic to Tasmania. It is found in grassy habitats at the edges of streams, wetlands, woodlands and farmland.

There is a whitish patch on the flank. The bill is yellow-green, the eyes are red and the legs are grey.

It feeds on seeds, leaves and the occasional insect.
