The Sarus Crane is distributed in 3 main areas: northern India, Indo-China and northern Australia. It is found in agricultural fields and grassland where it feeds on tubers, grasses, seeds, snails, insects, frogs, snakes, etc.. It is usually seen walking slowly with its head down searching for food.

It looks similar to the Brolga A. rubicunda but note the red facial skin extending to the upper neck, the lack of a dewlap under the chin and the red compared to grey legs.
