The Rufous Whistler is distributed throughout Australia with the exception of Tasmania and is also found in New Caledonia. It inhabits a variety of mostly wooded or scrubby habitats.

Male Rufous Whistler, Mareeba, Queensland, Australia, November 2010 - click for larger image The male, seen in photos 1 and 2, has a rufous belly and a white throat surrounded by a broad black band while the upperparts are grey. The female is similar to the immature birds shown in photos 4 and 5 but does not have the pale bill nor the rufous on the wings that the immature shows. Photo 3 is of a sub-adult male showing features intermediate between the immature and the full adult.
