The Osprey is distributed in most countries of the world but most populations are migratory tending to breed in the northern hemisphere and winter in the southern hemisphere. The Australian populations differ in being largely sedentary. It is always found at or near water both salt and fresh where it hunts for fish.

Osprey, Cheyne Beach, Western Australia, October 2013 - click for larger image The sub-species found in Australia P. h. cristatus is smaller and shorter-winged than other races such as those of Europe and the Americas. It also has a whiter head and narrower eye-stripes.
