The Osprey is distributed widely in both the Old and New Worlds but breeds almost exclusively in the northern hemisphere. Most populations are migratory and those seen in South America arrive from North America around October and return north in March / April.

Osprey, Pantanal, Mato Grosso, Brazil, December 2006 - click for larger image It is found near both salt and fresh water but requires the water to be reasonably clear so that it can catch the fish on which it feeds.

It has a mostly white head with dark brown mask and mainly white underparts contrasting with dark brown upperparts.
