The Masked Lapwing is distributed in northern and central Australia and in New Guinea. It is found in a wide variety of open habitats both inland and coastal usually with short grass and close to water. |

This species has been split from Black-shouldered Lapwing V. novaehollandiae by HBW and Birdlife International on the basis of its much larger face lappets; smaller black cap; lack of black collar, more contrasting wing bar and lack of black tips to the bill and carpal spurs. | |||
