| Tasmania, Australia February 2006 The Masked Lapwing is distributed in north, east and south-east Australia including Tasmania and in New Guinea and New Zealand. It is found in a wide variety of open habitats both inland and coastal usually with short grass and close to water. |

| There are two sub-species. These photos show the sub-species V. m. novaehollandiae from east and south-east Australia and New Zealand which has a black hind-neck which extends in a black band down the sides of the breast. These features are lacking in the nominate race of north Australia and New Guinea. | ||||
