|Black-shouldered Lapwing Vanellus novaehollandiae
(aka Masked Lapwing Vanellus miles novaehollandiae)
The Black-shouldered Lapwing is distributed in east and south-east Australia including Tasmania and in New Zealand. It is found in a wide variety of open habitats both inland and coastal usually with short grass and close to water.
|Previously lumped with Masked Lapwing V. miles this has now been split by HBW and Birdlife International on the basis of much smaller facial lappets; a larger black cap extending to the nape; the black collar; a darker, less contrasting diagonal wing bar and black tips to both the bill and to the carpal spurs.|
