There is confusion about the taxonomy of this species. Following Clements and HBW it is distributed in eastern Australia. It is found in rainforest mainly at the edges.

Brown Cuckoo-Dove, Mission Beach, Australia, December 2010 - click for larger image Authorities such as Clements and HBW classify it as a species Macropygia phasianella, others such as Howard & Moore as a subspecies Macropygia amboinensis phasianella, while Schodde & Mason (1997) have divided M. a. phasianella into M. a. phasianella, M. a. quinkan and M. a. robinsoni. Under their classification, these photos are of M. a. robinsoni since they were taken south of Cooktown and north of the Fitzroy Basin. All rather confusing really and there seems to be some taxonomic clarification required for this species.
