The Hoopoe is found in much of the Old World. Northern populations that breed in Europe and Asia migrate southwards in winter while African, Indian and south-east Asian populations tend to be sedentary. In the UAE, there is a mixture of resident and migrant birds.

Common Hoopoe, Safa Park, Dubai, November 2010 - click for larger image They are found in woodland, parks, gardens and oases and are often to be seen feeding on the ground searching for insects and invertebrates though they also feed on small lizards, snakes, frogs, etc.

The song gave the bird its English name and is a series of hollow poo-poo-poos
