The Lesser Hedgehog Tenrec is distributed in the south-west of Madagascar. See the distribution map at IUCN. It is found in dry deciduous forest and in spiny forest.

Despite appearances it is semi-arboreal and climbs along thin branches while foraging. During the dry season when food is scarce it survives by becoming torpid for 3 to 5 months between May and September.

When threatened it rolls into a tight ball.
