The Ethiopian Wolf is endemic to Ethiopia and is found in a few scattered sites of afro-alpine grasslands at between 3,000 and 4,400 metres. See the distribution map at IUCN. It is the only wolf species in Africa and the most Endangered canid species in the world with less than 500 individuals.

Ethiopian Wolf, Sanetti Plareau, Ethiopia, January 2016 - click for larger image They feed almost exclusively on the rodents in their habitat which are mainly the Giant Mole Rat Tachyoryctes macrocephalus and some grass rats. These are stalked in the open and the wolf then pounces or digs the prey out of its burrow.
