The wolf used to be distributed throughout much of the northern hemisphere in all continents but has now retreated northwards and away from the more heavily populated areas.

They are pack animals with a highly developed social structure. This wolf was on its own and very close to the lake shore which we were told was unusual but possibly explained by the fact that a female Moose and two calves had been in the area about 30 minutes earlier.
