The Long-legged Buzzard is resident in north Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, south-east Europe, the Middle East and central Asia. Some of the Central Asia breeding population migrates south to western India, Pakistan and Iran as well as parts of east Africa. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

Long-legged Buzzard, Boumalne du Dades, Morocco, April 2014 - click for larger image It is quite a large buzzard with long wings and a fairly long tail. The head looks smallish and the bill looks relatively large. The subspecies found in North Africa is B. r. cirtensis which is smaller than the nominate with a paler and more rufous belly.

The commonest call is a short "mew" falling in pitch and very similar to the call of the Eurasian Buzzard B. buteo
