The Lesser Whitethroat breeds throughout most of Europe except Ireland, Scotland, Spain, western France and Italy and into eastern and central Asia. It migrates southwards to Africa and southern Asia from July to September returning to its breeding grounds around April. It migrates at night.

Lesser Whitethroat, Monks Eleigh, Suffolk, England, May 2008 - click for larger image It is grey-brown above with a greyer head and tail with a hint of a darker mask around the eye. Below the eye is a thin white crescent. The bill is dark with a pale blue-grey base and the legs are dark grey.
