Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis)

There is no mistaking this common and delightfully coloured little finch.

It is normally found in flocks, sometimes called a "charm of goldfinches" which are often found on waste ground eating the seeds of thistles and teasels.

Photo 3 shows a juvenile Goldfinch in September. Photos 4 and 5, also taken in September, show a juvenile beginning to display adult plumage. The orange colour on the forecrown is quite spectacular.
