The Blue-cheeked Bee-eater breeds on the borders of the western Sahara and in the Middle East and Central Asia. In the winter they migrate to Africa south of the Sahara. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. In summer it is found in desert and semi-desert habitats but in its wintering areas it is found in less arid habitats such as savanna, river valleys, lake shores, etc..
