The Scarlet Finch is distributed in the Himalayas into China, north-east India, Indochina and Myanmar. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found on the borders of broad-leaved forests especially near streams at between 800 and 3,200 metres.

The specific name sipahi comes from the Hindi word for a soldier or sepoy and refers to the scarlet uniforms worn by Indian regiments.
